A steel plant is capable of producing 'x' tonnes per day of low-grade steel and 'y' tonnes per day of high-grade steel, where y=32−5x10−xy=\frac{32-5x}{10-x}. If the fixed price of low-grade steel is half that of high-grade steel, then the quantity of low-grade steel that should be produced per day for maximum receipts is

Solution

✅ Correct Option: 1

Taking the high-grade price as 11 unit, receipts are R=x2+32−5x10−xR=\frac{x}{2}+\frac{32-5x}{10-x}.

Then dRdx=12−18(10−x)2=0\frac{dR}{dx}=\frac{1}{2}-\frac{18}{(10-x)^2}=0 gives (10−x)2=36(10-x)^2=36, so x=4x=4 or x=16x=16.

Only x=4x=4 keeps x<10x<10, and it gives the maximum.
