A solid sphere of gold of radius 5 cm, is being melted in a furnace such that the radius is decreasing uniformly. When the radius is 1cm, the rate at which surface area (A) is decreasing w.r.t. time (tt) is equal to

(dvdt\frac{dv}{dt} = rate at which volume is decreasing w.r.t. tt)

Solution

✅ Correct Option: 2

V=43πr3⇒dVdt=4πr2drdtV = \frac{4}{3}\pi r^3 \Rightarrow \frac{dV}{dt} = 4\pi r^2\frac{dr}{dt}, and A=4πr2⇒dAdt=8πrdrdtA = 4\pi r^2 \Rightarrow \frac{dA}{dt} = 8\pi r\frac{dr}{dt}.

Dividing, dA/dtdV/dt=2r\frac{dA/dt}{dV/dt} = \frac{2}{r}. At r=1r=1 this equals 2, so dAdt=2dVdt\frac{dA}{dt} = 2\frac{dV}{dt}.
