A nutritionist is designing a daily diet plan of a person using five food items: Milk, Spinach, Almonds, Oats, and Rice. The Minimum Daily Requirement (MDR) of the nutrients Calcium, Iron and Protein should be 1100 mg, 15 mg, and 40 g, respectively. The following table gives nutrient content per serving of each food item:

Food itemCalcium (mg)Iron (mg)Protein (g)
Milk30008
Spinach9063
Almonds21046
Oats12035
Rice5014

Each serving provides a certain percentage of the MDR. For example, one serving of milk satisfies 20% of MDR of Protein. Further, the number of servings of any food item should be a whole number.

If only xx servings of Milk and yy servings of Rice are included in the diet plan, then the minimum value of x+yx + y that will satisfy the MDR of all three nutrients is

Solution

✅ Correct Option: 1

The three MDR constraints become:

Calcium: 300x+50y≥1100300x + 50y \geq 1100

Iron: 0⋅x+1⋅y≥150 \cdot x + 1 \cdot y \geq 15, i.e. y≥15y \geq 15

Protein: 8x+4y≥408x + 4y \geq 40

Rice is the only source of iron here, so y≥15y \geq 15. Once y≥15y \geq 15, the protein constraint is comfortably met and only the calcium constraint can still bind.

If y=15y = 15:

300x+50×15≥1100300x + 50 \times 15 \geq 1100

300x≥350300x \geq 350

x≥350300≈1.17x \geq \dfrac{350}{300} \approx 1.17

So x=2x = 2 and x+y=17x + y = 17.

If y=16y = 16:

300x+800≥1100300x + 800 \geq 1100

x≥1x \geq 1

So x=1x = 1 and x+y=17x + y = 17.

For y=17,18,…,21y = 17, 18, \ldots, 21, the smallest xx that works for calcium is still 11, so x+y≥18x + y \geq 18.

For y=22y = 22, xx can be 00, giving x+y=22x + y = 22.

The minimum value of x+yx + y is 1717.
