A nutritionist is designing a daily diet plan of a person using five food items: Milk, Spinach, Almonds, Oats, and Rice. The Minimum Daily Requirement (MDR) of the nutrients Calcium, Iron and Protein should be 1100 mg, 15 mg, and 40 g, respectively. The following table gives nutrient content per serving of each food item:

Food itemCalcium (mg)Iron (mg)Protein (g)
Milk30008
Spinach9063
Almonds21046
Oats12035
Rice5014

Each serving provides a certain percentage of the MDR. For example, one serving of milk satisfies 20% of MDR of Protein. Further, the number of servings of any food item should be a whole number.

The food item(s) that can satisfy at least half of the MDR for all the three nutrients using up to seven servings of that single item alone is

Solution

✅ Correct Option: 3

Half of the MDR is:

Calcium =11002=550= \dfrac{1100}{2} = 550 mg

Iron =152=7.5= \dfrac{15}{2} = 7.5 mg

Protein =402=20= \dfrac{40}{2} = 20 g

The largest serving count allowed is 77. Test each food at 77 servings.

Milk gives 00 mg of iron per serving, so 77 servings still give 00 mg of iron. Fails iron, reject.

Spinach with 77 servings:

Ca =7×90=630= 7 \times 90 = 630 mg, Fe =7×6=42= 7 \times 6 = 42 mg, Pr =7×3=21= 7 \times 3 = 21 g.

All three clear the half MDR. Qualifies.

Almonds with 77 servings:

Ca =7×210=1470= 7 \times 210 = 1470 mg, Fe =7×4=28= 7 \times 4 = 28 mg, Pr =7×6=42= 7 \times 6 = 42 g.

All three clear the half MDR. Qualifies.

Oats with 77 servings:

Ca =7×120=840= 7 \times 120 = 840 mg, Fe =7×3=21= 7 \times 3 = 21 mg, Pr =7×5=35= 7 \times 5 = 35 g.

All three clear the half MDR. Qualifies.

Rice with 77 servings gives only 7×50=3507 \times 50 = 350 mg of calcium, which is below 550550. Reject.

The qualifying foods are Almonds, Spinach and Oats.
