67.5%67.5 \% of all participants from Kerala at the Games were female. If we look at the sex-ratio of participants from Kerala as per the type of events, 56.25%56.25 \% of those in track events and 79\frac{7}{9} of those in field events were female. The ratio of female and male participants from the state in swimming events was given as 9:59: 5. If the number of female participants from Kerala in boxing and wrestling was yy times the number of their male counterparts in the same type of events, which of the options below is the closest to the minimum value of yy ?

Solution

✅ Correct Option: 2

The event-wise number of participants from the five states are as follows:

Track: 2124

Field: 2064

Swimming: 2364

Hence, the required combined number of participants will be 5.75 × 2124 + 5.25 × 2064 + 4 × 2364 = 12213 + 10836 + 9456 = 32505

Total female participants from Kerala = 2160 × 0.675 = 1458

528 × 0.5625 + 576 × 7/9 + 504 × 9/(9+5) = 297 + 448+ 324 = 1069

If all 144 participants from Kerala in racket sports were female, then the value of y will be the lowest.

1069+144 = 1213

1458 – 1213 = 245 = minimum possible number of female participants from Kerala in boxing and wrestling events.

Hence, maximum possible number of male participants from Kerala in boxing and wrestling events = 408 – 245 =163

Now, 245 ÷ 163 ≈ 1.5031 ⇒ 1.5 is the correct answer.
