IIM BANGALORE INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT:

(general male 98.32 percentile, got in directly)

(took zero pauses and just rambled off about everything)

(while walking into the room)

panelist 1: why is everyone wearing formals? did we specify that in the mail?

me: no ma'am, it's probably just an assumption they made. i personally wore it because i feel most confident and comfortable in it.

(she laughed, sat down normal greeting and stuff and asked if im comfortable and if my travel to the campus was convenient)

panelist 1: we saw that you mentioned that you did drama and acting in school, what was the most important lesson you learnt from acting

me: that is a very nuanced question ma'am. but to choose one specific answer i would choose adaptation. acting taught me to be aware of my surroundings at all times. while on stage ma'am, you never know what act might go wrong, what dialogue might be forgotten, or what prop might fail. my teachers always taught me to maintain my composure and to keep the show going.

panelist 1: what roles and plays did you put across

me: ma'am the biggest project we put up was the archies where i played the role of reggie mantle

panelist 1 (interrupting me): ohh archies? you kids also read old comics?

me: yes ma'am, we students picked the concept and tweaked it so that it works on a school stage. our teachers gave us suggestions and guidance but the larger side of the decision making was by the students. plus our school is anglo-indian aided, making the choice for archies even simpler.

panelist 1: so why do you want to come to iim bangalore?

me: i had always been dissatisfied with the concept of the ipm program or other management programs being the only gateway for 12th graders to enter IIMs. I had always looked out for something that gives economics the type of focus and priority in India, and iim Bangalore's announcement of this course gave me exactly that. its a golden ticket for a Charlie like me to enter a place where i can truly maximise my potential and passion of the subject.

panelist 2(taking over): so you want to get into research and stuff?

me: yes ma'am

panelist 2: so you mentioned that you made an economics project or case study on Kendrick lamar? (this was roughly the question)

me: yes ma'am. i have always loved combining my interests. and 2 of my most prominent interests have been rap music and economics. so my project basically has musical undertones to it, but it is truly an economic case study. one of Kendrick's most prominent albums, my personal favourite, is called to pimp a butterfly. the introductory song on that album goes by the name Wesley's theory. now Wesley's theory itself is not proven, but my case study was my closest attempt at proving it.

panelist 2: so what is Wesley's theory

me: Wesley snipes was an African American black rights activist who is currently in jail for tax evasion. he theorised that the American government or just the overall American economic system is created in such a way where it doesn't favour black americans. it creates economic bubbles in certain geographical zones which have a higher population of black residents, where they sell an excess of certain commodities that allows them to be taxed more.

panelist 2: how did you try and prove that? what statistics did you have?

me: that was the issue ma'am. reliable large scale statistics that go against the government are hard to find. so my project aimed at proving why African americans have a disadvantage in the American economy, for reasons other than racism and the not yet proven Wesley's theory.

panelist 2: do you think India also has a similar issue with certain minorities?

me: of course ma'am. India has historically had discriminated communities. Dalits and the untouchables in the past have always suffered and been disadvantaged.

panelist 2: what steps has the Indian government taken to reduce this gap?

me: ma'am they have implemented social security schemes and also used reservations

panelist 2 (interrupting me): how have they used reservations? and do you agree with its usage?

me: basically ma'am, reservations are a necessity and have helped a lot of students and underprivileged families bridge the gap between poverty and confirmed sustenance. even beyond college seats, reservations have ensured political representation of these communities. however, fake documentation or non-updated documents can cause reservations to be misused by students to get unfair admissions, and reservations now should be based on income as well, not only class or past. its not really fair for a student in a Bugatti to get an obc reservation.

I had a couple of questions regarding the IPM program at IIM Jammu. I understand that the mess fee changes from year to year, but could you please share the approximate or expected mess fee based on the current year? It would really help me with my financial planning.

Also, could you please let me know if there are any scholarships or financial assistance schemes available for IPM students at IIM Jammu?

Wasn’t able to draw the payoff matrix for prisoners dilemma but explained everything else good enough and thorough maybe not quick but good answers

Really good conceptually sound answers and

Real life application they asked for prisoners dilemma

I said public literring , everyone litters because it’s dominant strategy if I see everyone is literring it’s in my best payoff and incentive not to take efforts and litter too

Asked me cm of Kerala I said cm of Tamil Nadu

Asked me capital of Tamil Nadu messed up said of Kerala they asked if sure I said I think I have jumbled things up

Asked about if u come to Ranchi what would be one thing that u change abt ycp

Answered tht impact means a small change in lives of people not a revolution and that topic needs to be brought first rather than last day

Asked what hobbies I have

Said I have been rescueing animals since 9

Asked what organisation in famous for animals

so i am taking a drop year for ipmat 2027 but i have no idea about what i'll do in my interview because of poor academics{78/84} and 0 ECAs so can you guys suggest some course or any other thing i can do in my to compensate my poor academics and justify my drop year

2 interviewers ,one male one female

(I don't remember the exact words I said or they said so I am just writing down the crux)

Enters, greets , F asks to sit and i do

F:- What is with all of you wearing black ?? Is it a coaching thing or what??

Me:- no ma'am I actually wore black cause my uncle said it was classic (something like that )

F:- We really wanna see different colours , during Covid online interviews we saw a lot of different colours anyways

(This colour thing lasted around a minute or so)

She asked me to introduce myself and which stream I am from and I just spoke two lines stating my name and where I am from and told my stream(commerce with applied maths) and told my % in class 10 and 12 which was 96% in both

She interrupted and said tell us something that isn't mentioned in your profile

I thought for a second and said ma'am all those achievements that I achieved , i did not get that by working extremely hard or pushing myself but because I genuinely enjoyed it and that's why I was able to stay consistent so easily and this is something that isn't mentioned in my profile.

she asked what all options I had , I said I was done with my rohtak and amritsar interview and i had shillong and ranchi calls , she asked what about Du , I said ma'am I did not prepare for Cuet so I didn't score well and got only 820/1000 and I won't get any good north campus colleges but south campus maybe , she asked still if I was considering , I said no ma'am I am not considering any DU colleges as I wanted to pursue management only so I kept my focus completely on ipmat )

She then asked about Scientific principles of management and what were my views on it , i said according to taylor there should be a post possible way to do a task which should be determined by scientific principles and rule of thumb should not be followed and I think that's a great thing to have

She asked if his principles were still relevant in today's world and i said yes they were , they asked which sector were they not relevant in and I thought for a second and said i was not sure , she asked but still which sector do you think , I said marketing and advertising

She asked so you are saying that Taylor's principles don't apply in marketing and advertising??

I said no ma'am that's not what I meant , I said in marketing and advertising for example we are designing a poster for some company , we can't have a best possible way of doing it as it depends from company to company.

And then she handed over to sir.

Sir said so you had maths as your subject

I said yes sir I had applied maths as my subject

He asked my favourite topic

I said percentage profit loss partnership

He asked what is compound interest

I explained

He asked to write down the formula and so I did

He asked what is N in this formula , I said sir it is the time period for example number of years if compounded annually

He asked what if compounded half yearly , i said sir we could multiply number of years by 2 and reduce the rate by half

He said what if quarterly

I said sir multiply by 4 and divide the rate by 4

He asked monthly i said multiply by 12 and then he started cutting me in between

He asked what if daily , i said multiply by 365 and ... He cuts again and asked hourly , i said further multiplying and dividing by 24 , he again cut and asked for seconds , I said further multiply and divide by 3600 and then he asked compounded every moment

(This one seemed like he was trying to stress me or something but thankfully i did not get stressed)

I said sir it would tend to infinity or something like that

He asked quite firmly if I was sure it would tend to infinity , I said no sir I am not sure

He asked if I knew of the concept of continuous compounding and I said no sir

He then moved on to graphs

Asked me to draw the graph of y=x , drew that in an instant

Then asked to draw y=2x+1 on the same graph

I took just 5-6 seconds and drew the line , the cuts didn't seem proper so I drew another graph with both lines and showed

He then asked where it will cut the x axis, I answered almost instantly for both and then asked intersection point which too I got almost immediately ,like just a second or 2

He then asked to draw y=x^2 which I drew instantly and then he asked to calculate area bound by the parabola and 2x+1

I began by integrating both the equations and did that correctly while explaining out aloud to him , then said we would find intersection points of these and was finding it when he moved on to the next question

Asked differentiation of log x

The graph segment went really great and I was really quick and on point with all answers and hope that impressed him

So I went in, greeted them. They asked me to introduce myself, I introduced myself.

They asked me about game theory and what I had studied in game theory.

I answered that I came to know about game theory during YCP in IIM Ranchi 2 years ago. A senior suggested I study it.

Many topics: Nash, Pareto, credible threats, etc.

Started cross-questioning on what Nash is and its use case in microeconomics.

I mentioned that Nash is basically a stability point and demand and supply stability is one use case.

He said that wasn’t his question. Then he asked again. I said one another concept is Pareto efficiency of Nash equilibrium, which I think I said off topic.

They asked what Pareto is.

Asked who John Nash is. I said founder of Nash equilibrium and started going off topic with John von Neumann and he broke me off and asked what John Nash’s profession was. I said I am unaware.

Asked why he got the Nobel Prize. I said unaware.

Asked if I know about his movie. I said unaware.

Then shifted to economics, asked what DMU is.

Explained with the example of a samosa. They said you’re a fitness freak, why samosa, so unhealthy. You said that gives more utility because it’s unhealthy.

Asked me to draw its graph.

Asked if it can be negative.

Asked a math question, gave an equation and asked to plot it.

Plotted.

Told to differentiate and double differentiate.

Start of grilling. I was able to answer derivatives correctly but not answer the logic for double derivative at first.

So they started questioning on double derivative and I said a stupid thing, that it’s rate of change of the rate of change, it shows how change is changing lol.

Then he was like what? Didn’t say that but expression, said something that went over my head, but then he asked me to explain. I said can I take a minute.

Then I said I cannot explain mathematically but I can give an example.

Say I am in a car, then the first derivative gives rate of change of speed, i.e. acceleration, and the second derivative gives jerk.

In our case, second derivative is constant 2, that means it’s smooth and no jerks.

Took me to gravity, then is d square by dx square for gravity, blah blah blah, went over my head and I bluffed with yes sir 😭😭 and reiterated my example.

He then again asked gravity because he didn’t get my answer.

I said, sir, I am unaware.

Then I said, sir, it’s also relative to what variable you take first. Like if you take speed as the first variable, then first derivative is acceleration and second is jerk.

However, if your first variable is acceleration, then first derivative gives jerk and second I am unaware, but so on.

Then asked me to give an extempore on why youth of India is blah blah change of India (because of YCP IIM Ranchi in my profile).

Somewhere in the middle of the interview, Kunal Shah they asked.

I told about CRED, WhatsApp, and now he is CEO, numbers 900 million, etc.

They asked what merger and acquisition is.

I explained.

Used the term parent company.

They asked parent company of Google.

I said I am unable to recall.

And CEO of Google.

Unable to recall.

(I knewwwww but bc yaad kyu nahi aaya yaaar itna basic)

And they said okay, best of luck, you can leave.

Then sir started to ask again

S- Do you follow current affairs?(i said yes). How?( i said from newspapers)

S -What newspaper do you read

S- Name the editors(couldn't name so he was kind enough to give one more chance and asked)

S- Name any editorial writer( i named pratap bhanu mehta)

S- What does he write upon(i mentioned an article of his while answering and said that I liked that article so much that I sent it to all my friends)

S- How did you send it? What platform did you use

(I said whatsapp and thought now the whole interview is going to be about whatsapp and i'm doomed but luckily it didn't)

( then sir opened one of his articles on his tab, read the title and asked if I had read that. I said i'm not very sure but I think i have)

(So he told me to explain so and he'll see if i have read that or not)

( It was over the US IRAN ceasefire, so i explained the situation)
