Which one of the following pair of linear equations is/are inconsistent?

A. x – y = 8, 6x – 6y = 32

B. x + y = 5, 4x + 4y = 20

C. 4x– 6y = 16, 8x – 12y = 18

D. 4x – 4y – 4 = 0, 8x – 8y – 10 = 0

Choose the correct answer from the options given below:

Solution

✅ Correct Option: 2

A pair is inconsistent when a1a2=b1b2≠c1c2\frac{a_1}{a_2} = \frac{b_1}{b_2} \neq \frac{c_1}{c_2}. In A, x−y=8x-y=8 but the second gives x−y=163x-y=\frac{16}{3}. In C, 4x−6y=164x-6y=16 but the second gives 4x−6y=94x-6y=9. In D, x−y=1x-y=1 but the second gives x−y=1.25x-y=1.25. In B both reduce to x+y=5x+y=5, so it is consistent with infinite solutions. Hence A, C and D.
