A man sitting on a train which is traveling at 50 km/hr observes that a goods train, traveling in the opposite direction, takes 9 seconds to pass him. If the goods train is 280 meter long, find its speed?

Solution

✅ Correct Option: 3

The man is a point, so the goods train covers its own length of 280 m in 9 s at the relative speed.

Relative speed =280/9= 280/9 m/s =2809×185=112= \dfrac{280}{9} \times \dfrac{18}{5} = 112 km/hr.

Moving in opposite directions, speeds add, so the goods train's speed =112−50=62= 112 - 50 = 62 km/hr.
