Jyoti can row a boat at 7127\frac{1}{2} km/h in still water. If in a river running at 1.5 km/h, she takes 50 minutes to row to a place A and come back, then how far off is the place A ?

Correct Option: 1

Downstream speed =7.5+1.5=9=7.5+1.5=9 km/h. Upstream speed =7.51.5=6=7.5-1.5=6 km/h. Let distance =d=d. Time =d9+d6=5060=56=\frac{d}{9}+\frac{d}{6}=\frac{50}{60}=\frac{5}{6}. So 2d+3d18=56\frac{2d+3d}{18}=\frac{5}{6}, giving 5d18=56\frac{5d}{18}=\frac{5}{6}, hence d=3d=3 km. Answer is 3 km.

Note: Option 1 gives 3 km which is the correct answer; the chosen option 2 (2.9 km) appears to be incorrect.
