Finding h(x)
A straight line through the origin making angle θ with the x-axis has equation
y=(tanθ),x
because slope is defined as m=tanθ (rise over run in a right triangle).
Here θ=60∘, so
h(x)=xtan60∘=3,x
Finding g(x)
Two points are given: (−a,0) and (0,a). Slope from two points:
m=x2−x1y2−y1=0−(−a)a−0=aa=1
Since (0,a) is the y-intercept, using y=mx+c:
g(x)=x+a
Relating them
From h(x)=3x we get
x=3h(x)
Substitute into g(x)=x+a:
g(x)=3h(x)+a
Multiply both sides by 3:
3,g(x)=h(x)+a3
3,g(x)−h(x)=a3
Answer: (a)
