Firstly, a simple example to explain how reservation works:
Imagine the test and the interview are over.
We now have fifteen candidates: 7 general and 8 NC-OBC (example). There are ten seats: 3 seats reserved for NC-OBC candidates (example).
These are everyone's scores:
Now, the three reserved seats for NC-OBC candidates don't go to OBC1,2,3.
We first have to look at the 'unreserved seats', which are 7. They are not reserved for general category, they are 'unreserved'.
So, the first seven candidates: General1,2,3,4 and OBC1,2,3 get admission through the unreserved seats.
Now, OBC4, OBC5 and OBC6 will gain admission through the three reserved seats.
If you legally and morally fall under a category, please use it.
Reservation norms as per the government:
You can always work hard to get admission through the open-category. Even the EWS certificate opens the door to a lot of scholarships wrt college-fee payments (IPM is a ~40 lakhs endeavour).
Please fill up your paperwork at the concerned govt. offices and get your certificate made now itself. Else, you'll struggle with all the stress as the exams come closer (and the deadline creeps up).

No college has "general" seats. It's always "unreserved". That's the entire logic illustrated in the above post, righttttt?
So for iimb aprox 16+ 16 seats are left for general catg???
35.5% of 40 is 14.2, so, around ~14 seats in the worst case scenario (also, note that PwD reservation happens horizontally).

hello in my case i come in NC OBC category in State (Madhya pradesh) and i have valid caste certificate but in centeral level i come under general category .....so for ipmat indore exam my state level caste certificate is valid or not ?
Central-level certificates are preferred to be on the safer side.

does this mean that if a candidate applies through a reservation and gets in through an unreserved seat, they wouldn't have to bring any category certificate?
They'll still have to submit the category certificate in accordance to their registration form.

bhaiya,we have to renew ews certificate every fiscal year so if in the coming weeks i apply for iim banglore ug bsc program with my ews certificate and after that i dont renew it next fiscal year will it still work? also after applying for all the exams if i dont renew my ews certificate then is there any issue? because i will be considered as a general candidate then
You have to submit 2025-26 FY EWS during the registration form (for the entrance exam).
While getting admission (if selected), you'll have to submit the renewed 2026-27 FY EWS.

The soft-copy that you get is what you also print. Just like how every digilocker document is valid, so is your category certificate.

Exactly! We had 2 reserved-category students come through the open/unreserved seats in IPMAT Indore 2025 too.
