Does IIMs feel like a locked in/prison style ?

Hi Everyone, Please dont take my message in the wrong sense here. I had studied in a Reputed Navodaya School ( JNVs ) for 4 years before i took an exit and i have experinced first hand how it feels to be locked into a campus with no freedom of doing most of the things that you could do.

I just wanted to know whether it is the same case with the IIMs also like I have a big Online-Entrepreneurial dream but that requires a lot of effort and time and i wantede to know whether i can pursue that dream while being in a college like IIM. Also i heard that the policies for goin off-campus are strict and you can treally go out much and enjoy the city life and so on, Is that true ?

Please just give me some genuine insights.

Vani and I both were at an IIM (she at Indore) and we managed to make it work and build AfterBoards. However, Indore was a lot more strict as compared to Ranchi.

It won't be like Navodaya. You can leave the campus (depending on the IIM too -- Rohtak allows only during the weekends, Indore allows from 2nd year, Ranchi allows you to go out such that you come back before curfew + only 50% attendance at Ranchi).

Right now, I'd not worry too much from this angle. However, if you alr have something built and you're scaling it up, DU would work better!

I just want to make sure that my dream wont wither away if i join a college like IIM Indore and i am not given enough wiggle room to do stuff that i want. Realistically covering all the extra work that i need to do after the normal lecture hours and so, what is a realistic amount of daily free time that i will get ?

You have to make wiggle room. You're not wasting your time with other activities, you're learning how to do 50 more things at the same time so that you become more competent and capable.

You can get 10 hours free time, you could also get 0 hours free time. It depends on what you're willing to sacrifice.

Willing to not sit and gossip at the mess/canteen with your friends for an hour? Willing to let go of an evening walk or playing soccer/basketball for an hour or two? Willing to not study everyday and just wing it in the exam (sacrificing your grades)? Willing to let go of club/comms? Another hour in your hand.

I hope this made sense.
