New scientific evidence blames humans for the extinction of large animals and highlights the potentiality disastrous consequences for today's global systems. About 14,000 years ago, large land animals were spread all over the world and lived on every continent except Antarctica. Scientists had earlier come up with many explanations to account for the mass extinction of these large organisms, including climate change, disease and even the impact of an asteroid or a comet. This discussion has now narrowed down to two main theories: Natural climate change and human hunting.

About 12,000 years ago, the earth went through a period of warming. Glaciers melted and 'Ice Age' came to an end. Earlier theories had claimed that this warming may have been partly responsible for the extinction of Mega Fauna, which is a term used to describe any animal weighing more than 400 kg. Latest research, however, points to a human factor: overhunting. Scientists claim that 'human colonisation' was an important factor. The large animals who were already struggling with climate change became easy targets for human hunters who killed them for food.
