What is the thumb rule in VA Sectionals supposed to mean exactly?
I know that the thumb rule is
No. of easy questions x 4 = a
No. of medium questions x 2.5 = b
No. of difficult questions x 2 = c
And then the thumb-rule score will be (a+b+c).
Now, I wanted to ask – is this an ideal score? Or is this where the "peak" is supposed to be?
I guess I'm asking in similar terms of mocks – is the thumb rule ka score the peak, a good score, or a couple bins to the right wala score?
Thanks ya' all

bhavesh bhaiya-"The thumb-rule is more than the cutoff but below "OMG WOW CRAZY SCORE", a middle of these two, a comfortable 'target mark' that many unreserved students (who are at Indore) scored."

No, this is the ideal that's scored by top 60 rankers. It means solving all the easy qs, 62.5% of Mid qs, and 50% of the hard qs correctly (more if the rest r mistakes rather than leaves). Same for mock VAs (qa formulae will differ ofc).
But in my opinion you should aim higher (acc to the current formulae ideal VA 2025 score is 123ish, which is decent but not ideal 'safe level').
For top 60 (almost) confirmed, or top 30 with non-nuked Interview:
VA: (Easy x 4) + (Mid x 3) + (Hard x 2)
2025 VA Ideal: 141
2024: 146
2023: 155
2022: 136
(I had scored 141, 140, 165, 145 respectively in these, so matches the pattern)
For MCQs it can be sth like (Easy x 3) + (Mid x 1) + (Hard x 0.5)
This makes:
2025 MCQ Ideal Score: 54ish
2024: 61
2023: 84
2022: 72
(I had scored 49, Unattempted, 76, 73 in these respectively, again matches pattern)
SA:
(Easy x 4) + (Mid x 2.5) + (Hard x 1)
2025: 43.5
2024: 52.5
2023: 39
2022: 42
(I had scored 40, 48, 44, 52 so roughly matches)
Also fits in well with the scores I have heard of other ppl.
Thankyou so much!!!
Sorry for the late reply, but when you use the thumb rule formula you gave for MCQs, (Easy x 3) + (Mid x 1) + (Hard x 0.5)
It makes:
2025: 37
2024: 41.5
2023: 60.5
2022: 53
which does not match with what you calculated
So what formula exactly have you used here, and what would you recommend would be a good thumb rule for MCQ? (I was thinking maybe just increase the medium to 1.5 or 2)
